I have suddenly realized my growing power to not only enlighten the world on Mavs related issues, but to also help you raise your kids. I have scientific proof that I am capable of this. If 1 in 5 parents think their kids are online too much, then that can only mean that 4 in 5 parents encourage their kids to spend countless hours reading Mavs Land Musings. In fact, I recommend that the parents make family time out of it. Sit down with your kids, read, laugh and learn. Discuss what you've read at the dinner table on the couch in front of the television while you watch the game together. The next thing you know, your kids will be productive members of society who will be wealthy enough to buy you season tickets in section 106 or 107.

DIRK'S DIGITS!
I guess it was bound to happen eventually when Dirk has a let down game. The fact that we could still pull out a win (although it was closer than it should have been) is a testament to the strength and depth of talent on this team. Dirk shot 2 of 8 for only 15 points and only grabbed 5 rebounds, but I guess everyone's allowed to have a bad game every once in awhile. Lesson #1 for the kids: When your shots aren't falling, get to the foul line. Dirk was 11 of 11 from the stripe to help him score more points.
1. Erick Dampier - I decided not to combine you with Diop this time, because you made up for Dirk's lack of production in more ways than one. I can't begin to explain how weird it feels to say something like that about you, but with 12 points on 6 of 8 shooting to go with 11 rebounds and 2 blocks, the last one being a game saver, you were a beast. Lesson #2 for the kids: On that last block, Damp blocked the shot with his left hand, which was the hand furthest away from Ricky Davis. If Damp had tried to block it with his right, he would have made contact and put Davis at the line to tie the game. Since he blocked it with his left, we was able to get all ball with no arm contact. He also kept the ball in play so the Mav could regain possession. Everybody likes the ferociousness of sending the ball into the 20th row, but then the T'Wolves would have been able to inbound the ball, and get another shot at tying the score.
2. Josh Howard - 5 of 13 shooting isn't great, but he's getting back to where he can stay on the court longer. He played 34 minutes, which means his stamina is coming back. He scored 15 points, grabbed 8 rebounds, and added 3 assists and a block. Lesson #3 for the kids: If you aren't going to emulate Dirk, emulate Howard. Terry has the personality and the jumpshot, Harris has the quickness and the court awareness, but Howard has the all around game. Learn to play solid defense, whether it's man or zone, learn to help your teammates on defense, share the ball, develop solid range on your jumper, and drive the lane to get the easy shots or a trip to the foul line. Also, Howard can teach you that it's never too late to get braces to fix your teeth and have a beautiful smile.
3. Randy Foye - Kevin Garnett would have been the easy choice here, but I decided against him for the same reason that I have excluded Dirk from 3 Cheers status. He's too automatic that no one else would have room here. I'm going with the rookie who shot 7 of 14 for 17 points, 14 of which came in the 4th quarter when the T'Wolves reduced a 20 point deficit to 1 near the end of the game. He also collected 4 rebounds and 2 steals. Lesson #4 for the kids: Just because you're a rookie on a team that clearly has an alpha dog, if your shots are falling, keep shooting. It's called a zone. When you get in it, stay in it.
RANDOM CRAP!
- I was watching the game off and on because I had my parents over for dinner along with my buddy Adam, the Navy SEAL. It was great to be able to talk to him in a small, quiet environment so that he could teach us how to infiltrate enemy soil undetected. We practiced in the family room.
- Mike Jones, the point guard for Minnesota, is the guy that we were really going after this offseason in free agency. He chose Minnesota for playing time and money, but he doesn't seem to have any ill will upon his first visit here with his new team. Says James: "Mark Cuban, that's my boy. I learned one thing. Mark Cuban is a Toys R Us kid. He doesn't want to grow up. You know what I'm saying?" I don't have any ill will either, because for what we would have spent on him, we were able to get Devean George and Greg Buckner, plus not take away minutes from Devin Harris. It's a win-win situation, except that he lost last night.
- My buddy and former college roommate, Rob, called me Monday night to tell me that he was going to the game and sitting on the floor not 2 rows behind Tony Romo. That's sweet. What he should have called and said was that he was going to the game and sitting on the floor not 2 rows behind Tony Romo and he couldn't think of a single other person that he wanted to take with him rather than the biggest Mavs fan he knows that would forever be indebted to him for the opportunity and would have spoken glowingly about him on his Mavs-related blog.
- Did that last point sound bitter?
- The paper today mentions that the Mavs rallying cry this season is "Finish" as in finish plays, finish on defense, finish out games, and finish off an opponent when you are clearly dominating them for 2 3/4 games in the NBA Finals. That was the second best news I have heard all day.
Hopefully I've provided you all with great tips for raising your kids, as well as provided the kids with solid fundamentals to practice on and off the court. Here's a few more: Parents that are looking to punish their children when they, say, don't do their homework, don't mind your requests, or maybe launch a new nuclear weapons campaign against the wishes of the rest of the global powers, should take a page out of America's rules of teaching lessons. That'll learn 'em. Also, kids, just because you think someone is clean cut and trouble free doesn't mean they don't have some demons. I mean who could have seen this coming? Just because someone raps about bitches and hoes, smoking weed, drinking gin and juice, and popping a cap in the ass of player haters, doesn't mean they won't run afoul of the law from time to time. Some times role models fall off their pedestal even if their beats are funky.
Enjoy the game tonight against the Raptors, and welcome back a few guys with Texas ties. Chris Bosh, from Dallas, and TJ Ford and PJ Tucker, former Longhorns, will be suiting up across from our heroes. Enjoy it with your family. Here endeth the lesson. Go Mavs.
